Amethyst
Amethyst's rich, royal purple clarity makes it one of the best-loved gem stones. It is also a powerful mystical stone of many metaphysical and healing properties.
The name of amethyst comes from the Greek word "amethystus," which literally means "not drunk." The Ancients drank powdered amethyst to ward off intoxication and its ill aftereffects before they sat down to party. Amethyst is effective against all forms of intoxicants, not just alcohol.
The Chaldean Magi believed that amethyst protected the wearer against evil sorcery and brought good luck. Similar beliefs led the Egyptians to place amethyst talismans upon the hearts of their dead to protect them on their journeys through the afterlife.
Amethyst has long been renowned for its ability to open the higher mind to ancient wisdom. Its purple/violet color resonates to the vibrations of the second chakra known as the third-eye. Opening this chakra, amethyst stimulates the flow of memories from past lives and psychic powers.
Amethyst is a form of quartz, as are many other stones and gems. Its colors range from pale rose and lilac, which are sometimes called "Rose de France," to deep royal purple. The deep colors are most prized, especially if they include rose flashes. Lower-cost amber includes some white quartz, and that combination is also quite pleasing to the eye.
Amethyst metaphysical properties include calming the mind and emotions, enhancing clear-headed ("not drunk") thinking, and enabling shrewd business decisions. Known as a "transmutational" or change stone, amethyst can help bring about new opportunities and dispel rigidly held old beliefs that are holding one back.
Amethyst healing properties make it one of a healer's most valuable stones. Single crystals are powerful but clusters are even stronger. Amethyst clears negative energies so strongly that it is often employed to cleanse other stones after they are used.
Amethyst relieves headache, migraine, and eyestrain when it is placed upon the third eye (right between and just above the eyebrows). It also quells mental disorders, cleanses the blood, and strengthens the immune system. Amethyst balances and heals all chakras.
Wearing amethyst enhances one's personal charisma and attracts other people who are motivated to be of benefit to you.
Amethyst is the modern birth stone for the month of February. It is the stone of the astrological Zodiac sign Pisces, and is the planetary stone of watery Neptune.
