Coral

Coral is the skeleton of tiny sea creatures called polyps. Technically, it's the "exoskeleton" (or skeleton outside of the body). Most coral consists of minerals extracted from seawater and excreted around a polyp to support and protect its body. So coral is another of the five "Life Gems" derived directly from living things. (Amber, jet, pearl, and ammolite are the others.)

Most corals are of the red, pink, white, or blue varieties; they are composed of the mineral calcium carbonate. The rare black and golden corals are composed of a complex, horn-like protein called conchiolin. Red coral is valued the most highly. The ancient Egyptians thought red coral was composed of drops of divine blood, and therefore placed bits of red coral in tombs as protection against evil spirits. Legend has it that when Perseus slew the gorgon, Medusa, drops of her blood became red coral.

The metaphysical properties of coral include the infusion of joy and happiness. Coral enables the wearer to enjoy life more, to reach out and embrace the world. Coral grows in wild abandon, looking much like the branches of trees or other random, exuberant sprouting of plants. In fact, coral was long thought to be a plant rather than an animal.

Coral is said to bring peace and quiet the emotions. It balances one's relationship with nature. Coral heightens intuition, imagination, creativity, and psychic perception. Coral can put one in touch with ancient wisdom and accelerate its remembrance.

Coral is not a modern or traditional birth stone for any month. However, its loving nature is associated with the goddess and planet Venus, which rules the Zodiac signs Libra and Taurus. People born under these two Sun signs will be especially benefited by the properties of coral. Blood sugar levels and diabetes are also under Venus' domain, along with the kidneys. Wearing coral can help with related disorders.

Coral is also associated with Water signs. Red coral is for Scorpio; black coral is beneficial to Capricorn; and pink coral is the color for a Taurus.

All coral is rather dull when harvested but polishes up to a creamy luster. However, coral is sensitive to heat and acids; it will dissolve in ordinary household vinegar. So over time, coral tends to lose its luster.
