Topaz
The name of topaz comes from a Sanskrit word that means "fire." It is a brilliant gem, associated with the Sun since ancient times. Yellow topaz was sacred to the Egyptian Sun god, Ra, and to the Romans' Jupiter, also the God of the Sun.
Topaz metaphysical properties include the enhancement of spiritual potential, sharpening of intelligence and clear thinking, creativity and imagination, and clairvoyance or "clear seeing" into higher realms. Topaz opens the heart to compassion, understanding, kindness, and sympathy.
Topaz is known as the stone of true love and success in all efforts. The intelligence and wisdom that it conveys produces "luck" and wealth.
Most people visualize topaz as sunny yellow, but it comes in many colors and may even be clear as white diamond. Natural pink topaz is beautiful and very popular. Green and blue topaz is typically heat-treated to enhance those colors. Colorless topaz is often irradiated and heated to make it various shades of blue. Brown, orange, sherry, and red topaz also occur naturally in Sri Lanka and Brazil. Different colors of topaz are of particular benefit for different persons and desires:
- Blue topaz calms the emotions, enhances creativity, and opens the pathways to psychic abilities
- Clear topaz enables communication with non-human species

- Yellow or gold topaz brings abundance
- Green topaz dispels angry, vengeful thoughts
- Sherry topaz benefits students and scholars by opening their minds to more readily accept knowledge
- Brown or red-brown topaz alleviates self-doubt and mistrust
- Pink topaz encourages honesty and integrity.
Healing properties of topaz include the calming of emotional disturbances, stimulation of the digestive system, staunching the flow of blood, and easing of tension. Specific diseases for which topaz is effective include gout, blood disorders, hemorrhages, tuberculosis, and ailments of the endocrine system. Topaz is also said to slow or reverse the aging process. Again, specific colors are most effective against specific conditions:
- Blue topaz heals thyroid gland disorders, assists in weight loss, and enhances creativity
- Yellow speeds tissue regeneration, detoxifies the body, and relieves irritability caused by lack of sleep
Yellow topaz is the modern birth stone for the month of November. Blue topaz is an ancient December birth stone. Topaz is the stone of the astrological Zodiac sign, Sagittarius. It is also the planetary stone of Jupiter.
